Giới thiệu – Vì sao nên học Idioms & Fixed Expressions

Khi học tiếng Anh, nhiều người thường tập trung ghi nhớ từ đơn lẻ. Tuy nhiên, người bản xứ hiếm khi giao tiếp bằng cách ghép từng từ rời rạc. Họ sử dụng những idioms (thành ngữ) và fixed expressions (cụm diễn đạt cố định) để câu nói trở nên tự nhiên, sinh động và giàu sắc thái hơn.

Ví dụ: thay vì nói I’m very happy, người bản xứ có thể nói I’m over the moon hay I’m on cloud nine. Thay vì Let’s start again, họ sẽ nói Back to the drawing board.

Idioms là gì?

Idioms là các cụm từ có nghĩa bóng, khác với nghĩa đen của từng từ cấu thành. Ví dụ:

Break the ice = phá vỡ bầu không khí ngại ngùng, không phải “đập băng”.
Spill the beans = tiết lộ bí mật, không phải “làm đổ hạt đậu”.

Fixed Expressions là gì?

Fixed expressions là những cụm từ cố định, có ý nghĩa quen thuộc và cách dùng gần như không thay đổi. Ví dụ:

By the way (nhân tiện)
To be honest (thành thật mà nói)
As far as I know (theo như tôi biết)
